Vierumäki offers excellent mountain biking opportunities for beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike. Most of the trails start from the Vierumäki area and run in different lengths amid the regions’ beautiful nature. There are mountain biking trails of three, five, seven and ten kilometres in the vicinity of Vierumäki. In addition, the illuminated 12-kilometre-long Valo-Ilves runs from Vierumäki to the Heinola district of Jyränkö.
The trails are wide and have a relatively smooth surface. However, there are a few steep uphills along the trails, after which mountain bikers can enjoy the rewarding rush of high-speed descents.
When in terrain, cyclists are responsible for not harming nature. Let’s take pride in fulfilling this responsibility.
Gravel biking is a form of cycling that combines the best aspects of mountain biking and road cycling, and as such, it is quickly growing in popularity. As a gravel bike enables riding on jogging tracks, snowless skiing trails and forest roads, your imagination is the only limit to planning your cycling adventure!
There are no marked gravel cycling routes in the area, but we recommend taking a look at the map to discover the entertaining routes towards Heinola, Vuolenkoski and Nastola! The best way to start is to read the Päijät-Häme cycling guide (in Finnish).
Our favourite summertime resting places include Café Kailas in Heinola, Rantamesta in Vuolenkoski and Café Myllykahvila in Immilä.

In addition to our excellent mountain biking terrains, the extensive road network around the Sports Institute is ideal to cyclists. In the east, cyclists can take a respite in a café in Vuolenkoski Village (approx. 15 km from the institute), while in the west, they can pause to admire the idyllic Old Vääksy Village (30 km) or the breathtaking scenery of Pulkkilanharju Esker (45 km). The boldest pedal all the way to Kalkkinen Village to savour Mani-Baari’s legendary pizzas or Pihamaa’s homemade soft drinks! Further information on our routes and more detailed instructions are available at the Outdoor Centre.
Road and triathlon cycling in the Päijät-Häme Region are known for the well-maintained pavement, the rolling hill profile that follows the Second Salpausselkä ridge and the excellent rest sites! However, please pay attention to safety when cycling, wear a helmet and use a taillight. The routes run on public highways with speed limits ranging from 50 to 80 km/h, and heavy traffic may be present in the area. The Sports Institute is not responsible for the maintenance or safety of the routes.
