Explore our forests

Did you know that our location surrounded by nature inspired the founder of the Finnish Sports Institute, Lauri “Tahko” Pihkala, when he was looking for a suitable place for a new sports institute? The dry pine forests, swamps with a genuine wilderness atmosphere and trails that run along the shores of clear-water lakes provide excellent conditions for hiking and diverse outdoor activities throughout the year. Our marked nature trails and extensive network of paths allow you to enjoy nature without leaving a trace. When in nature, please consider others and leave the resting areas in a tidy condition when leaving.

Our surroundings also serve as a gateway to the Salpausselkä Geopark that displays landscapes created by water. Vierumäki is split by the eskers of the Second Salpausselkä ridge which is part of Finland’s internationally renowned geological natural heritage. The eskers’ history is explained by the Salpausselkä Geopark that has been nominated as a UNESCO Global Geopark site.

SUP boards and canoes in the summer

How different the familiar forests look from a fresh perspective! The naturally beautiful lakes of Vierumäki (e.g. Valkjärvi, Suurjärvi and Saarijärvi) provide a peaceful setting for paddling and SUP boarding alone or in a group.

We rent canoes and SUP boards during the summer season for unhurried paddling experiences in the tranquil waters of the Vierumäki area. The equipment, including paddles and floatation garments, are rented at the Outdoor Centre. The boards and canoes can be found on the shore of Lake Valkjärvi.

Explore our lakes

Located right behind Hotel Fennada, Lake Valkjärvi is Vierumäki’s oasis that attracts visitors to rejuvenate in its pristine water all year round. In the winter, the spring-based lake provides a brisk setting for ice swimming, while in the summer, it bursts into full splendor as a popular destination for swimmers, sun worshippers and paddlers. From Valkjärvi, you can easily cross the isthmus to Lake Suurijärvi, via which you can expand your water adventure all the way to Lake Ahvenlampi. Have you heard of Pancake Beach? Bathed in the summery evening sun, the sandy beach offers the warmest swimming water in Vierumäki. On Pancake Beach, or Letturanta in Finnish, you can also eat a packed lunch by the campfire!

Ask our staff for the best tips or see the map for lake locations and plan the perfect summer water adventure for yourself or a group!
